We explore some of the risks related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) from an actuarial perspective based on research from a transregional industry focus group. We aim to define the key gaps and challenges faced when implementing and utilising modern modelling techniques within traditional actuarial tasks from a risk perspective and in the context of professional standards and regulations. We explore best practice guidelines to attempt to define an ideal approach and propose potential next steps to help reach the ideal approach. We aim to focus on the considerations, initially from a traditional actuarial perspective and then, if relevant, consider some implications for non-traditional actuarial work, by way of examples. The examples are not intended to be exhaustive. The group considered potential issues and challenges of using AI, related to the following key themes:
Ethical
○ Bias, fairness, and discrimination
○ Individualisation of risk assessment
○ Public interest
Professional
○ Interpretability and explainability
○ Transparency, reproducibility, and replicability
○ Validation and governance
Lack of relevant skills available
Wider themes
This paper aims to provide observations that could help inform industry and professional guidelines or discussion or to support industry practitioners. It is not intended to replace current regulation, actuarial standards, or guidelines. The paper is aimed at an actuarial and insurance technical audience, specifically those who are utilising or developing AI, and actuarial industry bodies.

Objective:
Adolescent and young adult survivors of pediatric brain tumors often live with long-term neuropsychological deficits, which have been found to be related to functional and structural brain changes related to the presence of the tumor itself as well as treatments such as radiation therapy. The importance of brain networks has become a central focus of research over recent decades across neurological populations. Graph theory is one way of analyzing network properties that can describe the integration, segregation, and other aspects of network organization. The existing literature using graph theory with survivors of brain tumor is small and inconsistent; therefore, more work is needed, particularly in survivors of pediatric brain tumors. The present study used graph theory to determine whether functional network properties in this population differ from healthy controls; whether graph metrics relate to core cognitive skills: attention, working memory, and processing speed; and whether they relate to a cumulative measure of neurological risk.
Participants and Methods:31 survivors and 31 matched controls completed neuropsychological testing including measures of attention, working memory, and processing speed. They also underwent resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Resting state data were preprocessed and spatially constrained independent component analysis was completed to construct connectivity matrices. Finally, graph metrics were calculated utilizing an area under the curve method, including global efficiency, clustering coefficient, betweenness centrality, and small-worldness. Group differences and associations between graph metrics, cognitive outcomes, and neurological risk were analyzed using SPSS version 28.0.
Results:Results revealed a significant difference such that brain tumor survivors exhibited less small-world properties in their functional brain networks. This was found to be related to working memory, such that less smallworldness in the network was related to poorer performance. There were no significant relationships with neurological risk, but there were nonsignificant correlations of small-moderate effect size such that lower global efficiency and clustering coefficient were associated with greater neurological risk. Comparisons to structural network analysis from a similar sample and additional post-hoc analyses are also discussed.
Conclusions:These findings reveal that survivors of pediatric brain tumor indeed display significant differences in functional brain networks that are quantifiable by graph theory. It is also possible that, with further work, we might better understand how metrics such as smallworldness can be used to predict long-term cognitive outcomes and functional independence in adulthood.

WEEDSIM is a bioeconomic decision aid for management of annual weeds in corn and soybean. It was field-tested for 4 yr in Minnesota. The decision aid has two categories of management recommendations: soil-applied plus postemergence (PRE+), based on estimated weed seedbank composition and density; and postemergence (POST), based upon observed weed seedling composition and density. Weed densities, weed control, herbicide use, environmental impact of herbicide use, weed management costs, crop yields, and economic returns that resulted from PRE+ and POST recommendations were compared to those associated with herbicide management systems (HERB) that were standard for the region. After 4 yr of applying WEEDSIM recommendations to the same plots, there were no increases in annual weed densities (seedbanks, seedlings, established plants, or seed production) or decreases in weed control or crop (soybean, rotation corn, and continuous corn) yields, compared to HERB. WEEDSIM recommendations resulted in average annual herbicide applications of 1.1 kg ai ha−1 for PRE+ and 1.0 kg ai ha−1 for POST, compared to 3.5 kg ai ha−1 for HERB. Environmental impact indices associated with PRE+, POST, and HERB were 0.75, 0.71, and 0.54, with the lowest value indicating greater environmental risk than the two higher values. Similarly, average weed management costs were $24, $33, and $77 ha−1 for PRE+, POST, and HERB, respectively. Based on crop prices of $94 Mg−1 for corn and $220 Mg-1 for soybean, the average gross margins over weed control costs were higher for PRE+ ($509 ha−1) and POST ($522 ha−1) than for HERB ($455 ha−1). In general, WEEDSIM appeared to make management recommendations that adequately controlled weeds, maintained crop yields, reduced herbicide use, decreased environmental risk, lowered weed management costs, and increased gross margins over weed control costs compared to the use of herbicides standard for the region.

A bioeconomic weed management model was tested as a decision aid for weed control in corn at Rosemount, MN, from 1991 to 1994. The model makes recommendations for preemergence control tactics based on the weed seed content of the soil and postemergence decisions based on weed seedling densities. Weed control, corn yield, herbicide active ingredient applied, and economic return with model-generated treatments were compared to standard herbicide and mechanical control treatments. Effects of these treatments on weed populations and soybean yield the following year were also determined. In most cases, the model-generated treatments controlled weeds as well as the standard herbicide treatment. The quantity of herbicide active ingredient applied decreased 27% with the seed bank model and 68% with the seedling model relative to the standard herbicide treatment. However, the frequency of herbicide application was not reduced. In 1 yr, seed bank model treatments did not control weeds as well as the standard herbicide or seedling model treatments. Corn yields reflected differences in weed control. Net economic return to weed control was not increased by using model-generated control recommendations. Weed control treatments the previous year affected weed density in the following soybean crop. In 2 of 3 yr, these differences did not after weed control or soybean yield. Although tactics differed, the bioeconomic model generally resulted in weed control and corn yield similar to the standard herbicide. The model was responsive to differing weed populations, but did not greatly after economic returns under the weed species and densities in this research.

Previous efforts to model crop yield loss from multiple weed species constructed competitive indices based on yield loss from individual weed species. Our model uses a multispecies modification of Cousens’ rectangular hyperbolic yield function to estimate a nonlinear competitive index for weed-crop interference. Results from 13 Minnesota and Wisconsin data sets provide measures of the relative competitiveness of mixed green and yellow foxtails, common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, velvetleaf, and several other weed species. Competition coefficient estimates are stable over years, but not locations.

Strawberries (Fragaria X ananassa Duch. ‘Midway’) were grown in the field with and without the use of black plastic mulch. One to three postplant applications of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)-glycine] at 2.2, 4.5, and 5.6 kg/ha or paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium ion) at 0.6, 1.1, and 2.2 kg/ha were made as directed sprays between the rows in 1976 and 1977. Glyphosate was generally more effective than paraquat for controlling weeds during the entire growing season, although both gave adequate short-term control. When late-season applications were made during 1976, a residual weed control effect was observed from both herbicides during early 1977. Crop yield, fruit size, and fruit quality were not affected by either herbicide. Similar results were obtained in a separate experiment in which strawberries were grown utilizing plastic mulch.

Averaged over the 3 yr, the quantity of herbicide active ingredient applied was decreased by 47% with the seedbank model and 93% with the seedling model compared with a standard soil-applied herbicide treatment. However, the frequency of herbicide application was not reduced. Soybean yields reflected differences in weed control and crop injury. Net economic return to weed control was increased 50% of the time using model-recommended treatments compared with a standard herbicide treatment. Weed control treatments the previous year affected weed density in the following corn crop but had little effect on weed control or corn yield. The bioeconomic model was responsive to differing weed populations, maintained weed control and soybean yield and often increased economic returns under the weed species and densities in this research.

Multijunction solar cells have proven to be capable of extremely high efficiencies by combining multiple semiconductor materials with bandgaps tuned to the solar spectrum. Reaching the optimum set of semiconductors often requires combining high-quality materials with different lattice constants into a single device, a challenge particularly suited for metamorphic epitaxy. In this article, we describe different approaches to metamorphic multijunction solar cells, including traditional upright metamorphic, state-of-the-art inverted metamorphic, and forward-looking multijunction designs on silicon. We also describe the underlying materials science of graded buffers that enables metamorphic subcells with low dislocation densities. Following nearly two decades of research, recent efforts have demonstrated high-quality lattice-mismatched multijunction solar cells with very little performance loss related to the mismatch, enabling solar-to-electric conversion efficiencies over 45%.

Background
Current health policy assumes better quality services lead to better outcomes.
AimsTo investigate the relationship between quality of mental health rehabilitation services in England, local deprivation, service user characteristics and clinical outcomes.
MethodStandardised tools were used to assess the quality of mental health rehabilitation units and service users' autonomy, quality of life, experiences of care and ratings of the therapeutic milieu. Multiple level modelling investigated relationships between service quality, service user characteristics and outcomes.
ResultsA total of 52/60 (87%) National Health Service trusts participated, comprising 133 units and 739 service users. All aspects of service quality were positively associated with service users' autonomy, experiences of care and therapeutic milieu, but there was no association with quality of life.
ConclusionsQuality of care is linked to better clinical outcomes in people with complex and longer-term mental health problems. Thus, investing in quality is likely to show real clinical gains.

Moderate and severe pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are associated with significant familial distress and child adaptive sequelae. Our aim was to examine the relationship between parental psychological distress, parenting practices (authoritarian, permissive, authoritative), and child adaptive functioning 12–36 months following TBI or orthopedic injury (OI). Injury type was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between parental distress and child adaptive functioning, demonstrating a significantly stronger relationship in the TBI relative to OI group. Authoritarian parenting practices were hypothesized to mediate relationship between parental distress and child adaptive functioning across groups. Groups (TBI n = 21, OI n = 23) did not differ significantly on age at injury, time since injury, sex, race, or SES. Parents completed the Brief Symptom Inventory, Parenting Practices Questionnaire, and Vineland-II. Moderation and mediation hypotheses were tested using hierarchical multiple regression and a bootstrapping approach, respectively. Results supported moderation and revealed that higher parental psychological distress was associated with lower child adaptive functioning in the TBI group only. Mediation results indicated that higher parental distress was associated with authoritarian parenting practices and lower adaptive functioning across groups. Results suggest that parenting practices are an important area of focus for studies attempting to elucidate the relationship between parent and child functioning following TBI. There was nothing unusual in an indemnity per se. Indeed, an indemnity could be seen as a forward step in European civilization, replacing the regime of indiscriminate plunder which preceded it—although it could equally be argued that in their pacification of north China following the razing of the Siege of the Legations in 1900 the Allies, through their looting of the Tientsin and Peking areas in disregard of recently agreed definitions, had acquired both indemnity and plunder. Indeed the chaos was such that among the first financial and contradictory consequences of the post-Boxer period was Sir Robert Hart's successful arrangement with the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation of a loan of Ts10,000 a month for the chief Chinese negotiator, Prince Ch'ing [I-K'uang], on the one hand, while in Shansi the Protestant Church refused to accept any indemnity for the Christian lives lost; consequently the authorities voluntarily agreed to establish a University on Western lines, to be maintained by the authorities, and to operate under joint control for ten years at the annual cost of Ts 50,000.

Organic semiconductors are under investigation for radiation sensors at Sandia National Laboratories. The wide band gaps, high resistivities, low dielectric constants, and high dielectric strengths of conjugated polymers suggest these materials may be suitable for solid-state particle counting detectors. A range of solution cast materials have been evaluated for this application, including polythiophenes and poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s, or PPVs.
Films were prepared by novel solution casting and mechanical stretching methods. Device structures including interdigital metal electrodes on glass and thin film transistors on SiO2 on silicon were fabricated by drop casting from solution and lamination of solid films. Transient and DC responses were recorded and analyzed. Experiments include laser stimulus for photoconductive pulse response, and field effect transistor testing. Mechanical stretching was shown to dramatically alter electrical properties of polymer films.
Future work will analyze the feasibility of single particle detection and analyze various geometries for optimization. The effects of traps and methods for reduction of trapping effects will be analyzed.
